The GALILEO™ 1000 Lantern is a rechargeable flashlight with 5 operating modes, named after the famous Italian astrophysicist Galileo Galilei, produced by Nebo in Grand Prairie, Texas, USA. The main setting of the lantern is a cool white light that provides full 360° illumination with a maximum output of 1000 lumens from a COB Arcus LED, which is excellent for covering a larger distant area. For a more directional beam, there is a 120° setting coming from the front of the lantern, producing 300 lumens, which is useful for tasks that don’t require close-range lighting. Besides the white light mode, the lantern also features a red light mode, which is useful for preserving night vision, reading at night, wildlife observation, and helps keep mosquitoes away when you’re in a tent, as they are not as attracted to red light as they are to white. It comes with a practical carrying handle that allows the lantern to be hung and easily carried, and it also has a carabiner clip so it can be conveniently attached to poles or backpacks.

The lantern is operated using the large button on the front and cycles through 360°, 120°, and red light with each press. All settings are adjustable between highest and lowest by simply holding the button down when the lantern is on any mode, and the brightness will gradually dim before brightening again. Release the button at the desired setting for your task. Direct access to the red light can be achieved by holding the button while the light is off, and each press will then cycle back through the settings if desired. The light always turns on at the highest setting, but with the memory recall function, the lantern can be programmed to remember a preferred setting so that when you turn it on again, it will light up at the remembered brightness.

The Galileo 1000 uses flex power technology and can be powered by the built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which recharges via the included micro USB cable, or it can use 6 D alkaline batteries as a backup when you run out of power or don’t have access to a charging source. To charge the internal battery, locate the charging port on the back of the lantern by lifting the protective cover and insert the micro USB end of the cable. Then connect the USB end to a computer, power source, or electrical outlet using a USB adapter. A small charging indicator next to the charging port will turn red while charging and turn green once fully charged. There is also a “power bank” function, which is handy for charging your devices when away from home. Simply plug your device’s charging cable into the standard USB-A port (next to the micro USB port) on the lantern to start charging. A light on the lantern will turn green to indicate the device is charging.
