Swivels

Fishing Swivels

A fishing swivel is a metal accessory made up of two or more elements that can rotate independently from one another. It typically consists of a small body with a ring attached at each end, allowing one side to be connected to the leader and the other to the main line.

Some swivels even include a miniature bearing inside for smoother rotation. A swivel can be single, double, or triple, depending on the number of rotating elements. When a swivel is used together with a clip, the two form a swivel clip.

The main advantage of a swivel is that it reduces or prevents line twist. Twisting of the fishing line is undesirable because it can weaken the line, affect the correct presentation of the rig, and create problems during casting, such as the formation of so-called bird’s nests, where multiple coils of line become tangled and form knots.

Sizes of Fishing Swivels

Fishing swivel sizes are generally indicated by numbers, from the smallest sizes, such as 20, to larger sizes such as 3/0. For sizes from 20 to 1, the higher the number, the smaller the swivel. For sizes from 1/0 to 3/0, the higher the number, the larger the swivel.
