Electronic bite alarms
What are electronic bite alarms (fishing sensors)?
An electronic bite alarm is a signaling system for fish bites (or for the movement underwater of the rig and fishing line). They consist of both mechanical and electronic components, and signaling can be done acoustically, visually, or by transmitting a signal to a receiver. Some models of alarms are capable of sending a signal to a reception station, which itself can be set to emit acoustic signals, visual signals, or even vibrations in the case of certain models.
They can be attached to bank sticks or dedicated support systems such as buzz bars, or, in the case of certain models, they can be directly attached to the rod’s blank. They can be used individually or in series, or in sets connected to the same reception station when using multiple rods. The sensors operate on batteries.
When do we use electronic bite alarms?
Electronic bite alarms are suitable for all types of fishing where the waiting time for potential bites is longer than a few minutes. They are exceptional for carp fishing but can also be used for other peaceful fish and even for predator fish fishing with bait.
The sensors have the advantage of allowing the angler to engage in other activities, from watching the water to organizing the fishing stand, and they can alert the angler to potential bites from considerable distances when the angler is not near the rods. For example, when the angler chooses to fish at night, an electronic alarm becomes even more useful, as it can signal both acoustically and visually any potential bite, which is difficult to detect in the dark.
When do we not use sensors?
Bite alarms are not recommended for fast fishing for small fish. Additionally, we do not use them when the fishing location rules expressly prohibit their use.
What functions and settings are available on fishing alarms?
In addition to acoustic signaling, or the previously mentioned capability to emit a signal to a reception station, some sensors offer other technologies of interest such as: tone adjustment, intensity adjustment, night fishing light option, and different signaling for line tension versus relaxation (run and drop).
