The Helle Rein knife, limited edition 2023, celebrates one of Helle’s favorite animals, the reindeer (Rein in Norwegian). The reindeer has been one of the most important animals in Norwegian wildlife for thousands of years, providing people from the Nordic countries with food, warm leather, and – most importantly for Helle – antlers for craftsmen.

Reindeer antlers are a prized crafting material for several reasons. First, they offer a hard yet workable natural material. Second, the natural variation in pattern and color makes them visually appealing. Third, Scandinavian reindeer antlers are a sustainable and renewable source for knife handles.

There is, however, a reason for highlighting the Rein this year – the ongoing state of wildlife worldwide. Even well-managed populations of wild and semi-domesticated northern reindeer are currently under pressure. The main threats, as in many parts of the world, come from human development. The Helle 2023 limited edition knife is therefore dedicated to raising awareness about the fragility of ecosystems in general and reindeer in particular. These large, graceful animals perfectly adapted to northern life provide the colors reflected in the knife – shades of brown accented by variations of white.

The knife features a polished 9 cm Scandi blade made from H3LS laminated steel. The composite handle has a wide curve constructed from equal parts leather and reindeer antler, framed by a front and back piece of dark oak. The shape is that of a classic Norwegian outdoor knife, suitable for most outdoor activities requiring a blade. The knife comes in a vegetable-tanned brown natural leather sheath with a reindeer print on the front.
